Mystically Wired: Exploring New Realms In Prayer

April 26, 2010

With Phyllis Tickle’s recommendation — “… yes, hands down, this is the best book on prayer that I have ever read” — I had to read this book. And though I might not agree with her statement, it’s still a great book that steals the realm of prayer from the intuitives, and gives it to those who lean toward the concrete, solid-as-earth, kind of thinking. It’s a book of prayer for the (if you know Myers-Briggs) sensing among us.

Why it’s not in the list of classics for me is that it assumes an American middle-class kind of framework that may not work for anyone. But that’s not a weakness. It’s a strength. It takes seriously the culture we, Americans, live in, and attempts a spirituality of prayer that is fit for today. And in that way, it succeeds admirably, and gives hope to those who find themselves flailing at the altar of prayer.

It’s a hopeful, accessible book on prayer, and if you find yourselves in the spiritual doldrums — where I find myself often enough — this can give you some concrete ideas to connect with God in ways that aren’t Herculean.
