Whenever I recommend books on parenting, I do so with fear and trepidation. I’m a fairly new parent myself with an 18-month old son, and sometimes what sounds like a great idea (like letting your baby cry for hours and hours in the night to sleep train), really ends up being a bad one for us.

Even with that disclaimer, this book seems to be a practical guide to help us teach our children how to be emotionally intelligent.

It was recommended to me by a future marriage and family therapist as her favorite parenting book, and that was enough motivation for me. And I found it to be free of tricks and manipulations, and really just helping our children feel affirmed, help them cope with their own emotions, and then to make healthy choices in the middle of it all.

It was a reasonable book that didn’t force any regimented structure on the child, but just helps parents understand them better. And that’s helpful.
