I received this book from a friend of mine for Christmas, and it truly is a sheer delight. The author’s prose in nothing short of sublime, while he brings the relevant parts of Irish history to the fore with a poet’s timing and a comic’s wit. He ultimately invites the modern reader to be filled with gratitude for the Irish, and asks us to have their open hearts and minds in relating to the world.

It was chilling to watch him deconstruct St. Augustine as a man who becomes more rigid and unfair as he gets older, but it’s easy to get swept up by the uneducated St. Patrick who convinced violent warriors to love Jesus, to lay down their arms to become more peaceful, and to treasure learning and the study of books. It’s corruption that has made the holiday of his namesake into a binge drinking party, because he’s a man that even the Celts could respect.

Skip this book if you have too much inspiration in your life to deal with. As for me, I needed the read.
