This is a book America has needed for a long time. It’s not that he’s saying something new: people have been crying out for this kind of world for a while. What’s different is that he actually lives it out with many doses of subversive joy, while still managing to shockingly woo or wooingly shock us out of our American comforts and face a different kind of reality. He’s a trained circus performer for Christ’s sake (literally), and brings the clown’s joy (and mischief) and a saint’s love to the table, unwilling to hate or villify those who have a differing opinion. To do that, one must truly know Jesus.
It’s actually been hard to write this review, because my emotions have run the gambit: inspired by a new vision of life in the Kingdom, guilty for not living as radically as I dream, sheepish for not knowing where to start, encouraged that someone out there is doing something with courage and love, laughing because someone out there is devilishly holy in his subversion, scratching my head as he challenges my leadership paradigms, broken about the cycles of violence and oppression all around us, and on my knees wanting desperately to hear how I’m supposed to live this out. I’m both fired up and confused, and it will take a while for the dust to settle after the explosion of this book.
So, yes, I beg you: pick this up and read it. Let me know what you think. Maybe we can figure out ways to do this radical kind of Christianity together.
