This book barely made the recommendations list. Brafman and Beckstrom don’t have Malcolm Gladwell’s ability to tell a story or Jim Collins’ ability to break it down and make the principles compelling. They have one thing going for their book: they’re asking the right questions and helping readers see the necessity of decentralization. (It’s hitting a felt need: I want to decentralize the organization I’m in even further.)

But the answer is still the same and almost cliché: it’s a mixture of centralization and decentralization. They try to go further, looking for the “sweet spot” of the perfect blend between the two, but they offer no principles, no guidelines — only other companies’ stories. So you’re left looking for the sweet spot, yet not given any clue on how to find it. It leaves the reader wanting much more.

The book’s a nice conversation starter, but go to Malcolm Gladwell or Jim Collins for more answers or insight.
