It’s nice to watch a movie and be inspired, to know that an individual — rooted with spiritual conviction — can make a difference in the world. If William Wilberforce’s story doesn’t move you, then you need to check your pulse.
Sure, there are moments of cheese — as when William Wilberforce finds his voice again at his wedding.
But then there are moments of gold. After finding faith again, Wilberforce is deciding whether to stay in politics or go into a life of contemplation. The abolitionists have come to persuade him to stay in politics, and one of them asks, “You’re deciding whether to do the work of God or the work of a political activist. Why not do both?” At another point, another person asks Wilberforce, “Will you praise the Lord, or change the world?” And I love that the message says that we do both.
The movie’s message is timely and needed. And make sure you have a tissue handy.
