I borrowed this book from a friend who said that she wanted to write like her, and this was one of her favorite books. That was a recommendation enough for me.

Winner is honest, thoughtful and clearly loves her books. And it shows up in her precise writing, giving me a tour of the religious lay of the land. But it’s not academic and brainy. It’s all heart and soul as well.

I had expected to learn more about Judaism. And because of her extensive studying, she shows me the big picture in the jot and tittle of the Hebrew text and commentary. But I didn’t expect to learn more about the Christian faith as well, and especially about the Christian calendar. And the connections she makes between the two faiths adds a richness to faith, like strong coffee.

It was a delightful read, but I could only take a few bites at a time. Like excellent chocolate cake, it had to be savored.
