The Film Is Not Yet Rated (2005)

Rating: 7

August 23, 2007

I’m continuing with my documentary kick. Although this movie has its own agenda, I think its value comes from bringing up this question: in America, the movie ratings system is slanted against sex but permits excessive violence. In Europe, however, it’s the other way around. Why?

The movie wants to assert that it should loosen these ratings on sex, but I actually think that ratings on violence should be made more stringent. Not to censor, but to guide. One commentor in the movie blamed the American ratings system for making us more “warlike” over the past 50 years.

Also, it’s scary how interwoven the MPAA and the movie studios are, and what they do to keep independent studios in check.

It’s worth the rental, but beware of graphic sex and violence. It’s not gratuitous, per se, because the director is trying to make a point. But it’s still there.
