City of God (2002)

It’s a great movie that’s based on a true story: a kid grows up in a slum called the “City of God” surrounded by gang violence. He finds a way out through photography. In the meantime, the viewers are given a realistic yet disturbing picture into life on another side of the world.

All of the characters have depth — not one of the main characters fall into a one-sided stereotype. And each draws you into this incredible story that’s told with great craft.
