The Lives of Others (2006)

Rating: 10

The storyline is set in East Berlin in the 1980s, before the wall came down. Captain Weisler, a straight-arrow member of the Stasi, is assigned to watch a playwright and his girlfriend.

What makes this movie great is the tension of Weisler’s choices. Through his surveillance, he becomes increasingly disillusioned by the East German government. As he watches, a longing rises in him for something more. And this longing leads him to choices he would never have made before. (I need to keep this vague so as not to ruin the ending.)

Definitely watch this movie. It’s a must-see and has definitely earned its Oscar for best foreign film.
