This book has been sitting on my shelf for a long time. But recently, I had a chance to meet the author and that pushed me over to read his book. When I had some extra time to read this at a retreat recently, I devoured the entire trilogy, and it makes sense to me why it has sold hundreds of thousands of copies — it connects with our human yearnings in a dramatic way.
It’s a “mythic retelling of the New Testament,” and the first book — The Singer — is the best of the three, though all are solid. I especially love how the main characters, each of whom has been healed by the Singer, wonder if their healing will stick after the Singer has been executed. You can feel their worries and grief, and it makes for more longing than the typical Cross-Resurrection tellings.
Pick this up for an insightful yet engaging read on the New Testament.
